A birth doula is someone who provides support to soon to be parents before, during and after birth. She understands the physiology of birth and recognizes the emotional and physical needs of a person in labour.
A doula works with you before your birth to assist you in preparing and carrying out your birth plans. She stays with you throughout labour and provides emotional support, physical comfort and an objective viewpoint. She helps you get the information that you need to make informed decisions during your birth.
She can facilitate communication between you, your birth partner and your care providers. She allows and encourages your partner to participate to their comfort level.
Most importantly, a birth doula knows that your birth experience is one that you will remember for the rest of your life and will work with you and your team to make it a memory that you will cherish.
“If a doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use it”
